Award: Sensitive Residential Addition

The home at 2011 Chadbourne Avenue in the University Heights Historic District was built in 1912 for Charles E. and Bertha Brown. Charles E. Brown is a well-known figure in historic preservation circles. He was director of the State Historical Society and worked selflessly in the early 20th century to protect Indian mounds in Madison.
The house is a pure example of the Craftsman style four-square, relying on the quality of materials and proportions for its architectural statement.

Mary Stevens and Erik Schneiderhan purchased this house in May 2000 from UW professors emeritus Herbert and Evelyn Howe, who had lived there for 52 years. A housing inspector assured them that the home was solid but needed updating. The new owners tackled many projects including a new roof, porch foundation repair and replacement of the knob-and-tube wiring.

What caught our attention was the historically sensitive addition to the back of the house. The owners were able to convert a back porch to a family room on the main floor with a bedroom on the second floor, seamlessly integrating the new and the old such that you cannot readily tell one from the other. The original character was retained throughout by matching new woodwork with the original styles.
