2003 Preservation Awards: Honorable Mention Heartland Birkenstock
414 State Street The former N.A. Brown store at 414 State Street is one of the oldest remaining commercial buildings in Madison. Built in 1855 of hand-dressed limestone in the Italianate style, it houses retail space on the first floor and residences or offices on the second floor. This was typical of most downtown buildings of the time. Throughout the 19th century it served as a grocery store. Heartland Birkenstock opened in October 2002 in the retail space that was formerly Madison Music, and before that Patti Music. Store owner Jeanette Riechers uncovered early-generation features like a pressed-tin ceiling and a tile floor outside the front door. The most interesting discoveries were the black-and-white glass panels in the display cases, surrounded by white ceramic tile — features that date from when the building was a meat market. These features were integrated into the display space for the new store. The Madison Trust is proud to recognize a small State Street business that made improvements while remaining within the building’s original footprint. home |
