2003 Preservation Awards Hiestand School (Toad Hill Coffee Shop)
4418 Milwaukee Street Hiestand School opened in 1915 to serve District 1, which included the townships of Blooming Grove and Burke, at what is now 4418 Milwaukee Street. Later annexed into Madison, the stuccoed schoolhouse, with hipped roof and belfry, had such modern conveniences as indoor plumbing, an oil furnace and electricity. Hiestand School closed in the 1950s when school districts were consolidated. It was designated an official Madison landmark in 1976, but by 1989 it had been boarded up. In the 1990s, new owner Dennis Kern, and later owners Bill and Donna Ziegler, made considerable improvements inside and out. It has evolved into the quaint and colorful Toad Hill coffeehouse, thanks to Toby Latimer who bought the landmark building in May 2002. Located next to Hiestand Park with its popular sledding hill, the coffee shop is a natural gathering place for residents of the Rolling Meadows neighborhood. Latimer and partner Henry Boehm had the electrical and plumbing systems upgraded, replaced acoustical tiles with pressed tin, built cabinets, and installed a beautiful granite countertop salvaged from the old Loraine Hotel. home |
